ÄIO achieves scale production milestone with 10,000L batch of sustainable fats and oils

The company has achieved full end-to-end scale-up

ÄIO, the pioneering biotech company developing sustainable fat and oil alternatives, has reached a groundbreaking milestone, scaling up its production to an industrial-level batch of 10,000 litres. This achievement marks the company’s biggest step forward yet, demonstrating the feasibility of large-scale fermentation-based fat production and paving the way for commercialisation.

Over the past year, ÄIO has progressed rapidly from lab-scale to pilot-scale production, and now, with the support of ScaleUp Bio, the company has achieved full end-to-end scale-up. The results speak for themselves:

– High-quality material ready for submission to the EFSA novel food permit dossier
– 48 per cent improvement in fermentation titer yield
– 60 per cent improvement in downstream recovery
– Successful transition from pilot to industrial scale

“This is a breakthrough moment for ÄIO!” said Nemailla Bonturi, Co-Founder and CEO of ÄIO. “We are proving that sustainability and scalability can go hand in hand. Thanks to our incredible team and partners, we are setting a new standard for the future of fats and oils.”

With industrial-scale production now a reality, ÄIO is moving full speed ahead toward regulatory approval and market launch. The company’s sustainable fats and oils provide an environmentally friendly alternative to palm oil, coconut oil, and animal fats – a solution with far-reaching potential across the food, cosmetics, and oleochemical industries.

This milestone signals not just growth but readiness. As ÄIO gears up for regulatory submissions and commercial partnerships, the promise of truly sustainable fats and oils is closer than ever.
