The new approval allows all commercially approved GM canola varieties to enter the Pakistani market, paving the way for greater export diversity across food, feed, and processing industries
In a major win for Australian farmers, Pakistan has officially approved market access for genetically modified (GM) canola from Australia, further strengthening bilateral trade ties and expanding opportunities for the nation’s oilseed producers.
Australia is already a trusted supplier of canola to Pakistan, with non-GM canola exports valued at $506 million in the last financial year. The new approval allows all commercially approved GM canola varieties to enter the Pakistani market, paving the way for greater export diversity across food, feed, and processing industries.
Around 46 per cent of Australian canola produced last year was genetically modified, underscoring the significance of this expanded access for growers and processors alike.
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Julie Collins said the decision reflects the Albanese Labour Government’s commitment to creating new market opportunities for rural and regional Australia.
“Pakistan is one of Australia’s top markets for canola, and expansion to GM canola unlocks new opportunities to export our world-class products,” Minister Collins said.
“Pakistan and Australia already share a robust trading partnership, and through this new market access, we’re strengthening the relationship between our two nations.”
The announcement comes amid continued growth in Australian agricultural trade. In 2024–25, the nation’s agriculture, fisheries, and forestry exports reached over $80 billion, with production value up 30 per cent in real terms over the past two decades.
Since taking office, the Albanese Labour Government has delivered 231 market access achievements, including 29 new markets opened and 104 improvements to existing ones.
The inclusion of GM canola access to Pakistan marks another step in expanding Australia’s global footprint as a supplier of safe, sustainable, and high-quality food and fibre.
