Singapore  – Tereos, a global leader in sugar, alcohol, starch & sweeteners, and leading provider of healthy formulations, announced the official opening of the Tereos Asia R&D Centre, in collaboration and supported by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB).

With an aim to provide novel solutions on key local applications to the Asian markets, Tereos food scientists at the newly established R&D Centre will leverage the Group’s extensive portfolio of products to address the regional demand for noodles, bakery products, confectionery, teas, sauces, snacks and beverages.

“Developing the added value of our products and services is at the heart of Tereos’ commitment to its customers. By setting up our new R&D Centre in Singapore, we have chosen to be at the heart of a region that has world-renowned expertise and enables us to act as closely as possible to better meet the needs of consumers,” said Alexis Duval, Chief Executive Officer, Tereos.

“Singapore’s vibrant innovation ecosystem has drawn companies to set up facilities here to boost their innovation capabilities, and we are delighted that Tereos has chosen Singapore to establish its R&D Centre in Asia. With innovation and openness being its core values, Tereos stands in good stead to address the shifting trends in the Food & Beverage industry as more consumers are seeking healthy and nutritious options,” commented Mr Lee Eng Keat, Executive Director, Agrifood; Commercial & Professional Services, Economic Development Board.

Promoting collaborative innovation

The R&D Centre aims to be a place of collaboration and synergy as Tereos food scientists will work closely with international and local clients. By providing them with tailor-made, innovative and sustainable formulations, Tereos thrives to improve food nutrition and quality for consumers in APAC. For example, the Tereos Sweet&You offering is a service that supports its customers with optimal sweetening formulation of their products.

With the launch of the R&D Centre at Biopolis in Singapore, Tereos also plans to collaborate with established research centres and leading academic institutions, to conduct studies and scientific research on food consumption and formulation.

“We are excited to establish our R&D Centre for Asia in Singapore as it’s the actual agro and food hub in the region with easy access to great scientific talents ranging from food processing to human nutrition science as well as aquaculture which is a big market for our protein development portfolio. Through this new R&D Centre, we are committed to develop tailor-made and tasty solutions adapted for the consumers in APAC, and expand our research network in terms of nutrition and science,” said Anne Wagner, Corporate Research & Development Director, Tereos.

Tereos in Asia

Since 2012, Tereos has established a strong network of industrial facilities and commercial offices in APAC, after successful developments in Europe, Brazil and East Africa. In a context of rapid growth in consumption in Asian countries, the launch of the Tereos Asia R&D Centre represents a strategic development opportunity for the Group and further reinforces its commitment to the region.

Currently, Tereos has two industrial facilities in China (corn / wheat starch facilities in Tieling and Dongguan, both in partnership with the Wilmar Group), and one in Indonesia (a corn starch facility in Cigading in partnership with FKS Group). Additionally, Tereos offers R&D services in Shanghai in partnership with the Wilmar Group, to serve the Chinese market. From a commercial standpoint, Tereos has four sales offices in Singapore, India,Vietnam, and Hong Kong, that have collectively exported to more than 20 countries worldwide.
