Potato chip company McCain Foods has completed a CAD 65 million ($51.46 billion) expansion of its flagship potato processing facility in New Brunswick, Canada.

This represents the largest investment in McCain’s Canadian capacity in nearly ten years, and reflects continued growth in North America’s frozen potato and potato speciality segments for both retail and foodservice.

The plant in Florenceville-Bristol, New Brunswick is one of 11 McCain factories in North America – including six in Canada.

Jeff DeLapp, president of McCain Foods North America, said “Florenceville continues to be the French fry capital of the world. The official opening of the new production line reflects McCain’s ongoing commitment to invest in the needs of our consumers and customers today, and also the company’s focus towards future product development and innovation.”

“During our 60th year of business, investment in the Florenceville-Bristol facility is a testament to the importance the community holds as the birthplace of McCain Foods. In addition to the more than 40 new jobs created, the construction build stimulated economic activity within the region, and an additional demand of 4,000 acres of potatoes is to be supplied to the facility by New Brunswick potato farmers”, he added.

In the past six decades, McCain has grown to employ more than 20,000 employees across 53 production sites worldwide, with sales in excess of CAD 9 billion ($7.13 billion).

The firm’s CEO, Dirk van de Put, will replace Irene Rosenfeld as the head of confectionery giant Mondelēz next month after steering McCain Foods to 50% growth in net sales and double-digit EBITDA growth during his six years in charge. He will be replaced by current McCain CFO Max Koeune.
