The changes aim to provide consumers with clear, consistent information and support broader public health initiatives by improving transparency around alcohol consumption
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has released new guidance along with an online calculator to help businesses prepare for upcoming energy labelling requirements for alcoholic beverages.
The resources support the implementation of changes developed under Proposal P1059 and are intended to make it easier for manufacturers and importers to understand what is required and how to apply the new rules in practice under the Food Standards Code.
From 13 August 2028, labels on alcoholic beverages will be required to include:
Energy content per serving
Energy content per 100 mL
Number of servings per package
Serving size
Number of standard drinks per serving
The changes aim to provide consumers with clear, consistent information and support broader public health initiatives by improving transparency around alcohol consumption.
FSANZ’s food regulation system guidance explains how the new requirements apply to alcoholic beverages and provides practical information to support industry compliance with the Food Standards Code.
In addition, FSANZ has released an online calculator to assist the industry with implementation. The tool enables businesses to calculate the average energy content of their products and prepare an energy statement, as required under the Code.
Together, the guidance and calculator offer practical support for accurate and consistent labelling and are designed to help businesses prepare well ahead of the 2028 commencement date.
