Egypt is intensifying efforts to safeguard food security and price stability as regional tensions raise concerns about supply chains and market volatility. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has directed governors across the country to step up monitoring of markets and ensure the continuous availability of essential goods at stable prices.
The directive was issued during a meeting with provincial governors held in the New Administrative Capital, where the prime minister emphasised the need for strict oversight of markets to prevent hoarding, hidden stockpiling, or manipulation of essential commodities. The meeting was attended by Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad and Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Sherif Farouk, along with several governors from across the country.
Madbouly stated that the government has already taken proactive measures to secure sufficient reserves of strategic and basic commodities for several months, ensuring that supply remains stable for both consumers and domestic industries. He also noted that the government is coordinating with the banking sector to secure the needs of the energy and industrial sectors, which are critical for maintaining production and supply chains.
Governors have been instructed to intensify field inspections of markets and commercial outlets in coordination with regulatory authorities to prevent monopolistic practices. Authorities will take firm action against attempts to withhold goods or artificially inflate prices.
The prime minister also referred to directives from Abdel Fattah el‑Sisi, who warned against exploiting the current regional situation to manipulate prices. The government is examining the possibility of referring serious price manipulation cases to military courts during the ongoing crisis.
To strengthen consumer protection, citizens have been encouraged to report cases of price hikes, hoarding, or unsafe food practices through the government’s Unified Complaints System, with governors instructed to respond quickly and take legal action against violators.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Supply is expanding initiatives such as “One-Day Markets”, designed to improve public access to essential food items at fair prices. Authorities are also facilitating the movement of goods between governorates to support farmers and help stabilise food prices across the country.
