The GISC in Breda will serve as the global hub for technological innovation, operations, and support across NewCold’s network
NewCold, the third-largest provider of temperature-controlled food logistics, celebrated a double milestone. King Willem-Alexander officially opened NewCold’s Global Innovation and Support Centre (GISC) in Breda. Immediately afterwards, the company inaugurated Europe’s largest fully off-grid frozen warehouse in Dinteloord. Together, these events underscore NewCold’s leading role in innovation, collaboration, and sustainable growth.
The GISC in Breda will serve as the global hub for technological innovation, operations, and support across NewCold’s network.
“This centre is more than just our new headquarters,” said Bram Hage, CEO of NewCold. “The GISC is our innovation engine—where advanced automation, AI, and robotics drive the transformation of refrigerated food storage and logistics. We are deeply honoured by His Majesty the King’s presence to officially open our new facility on Oosterhoutseweg today.”
Designed with a strong focus on sustainability and employee well-being, the bright white building also allows ample room for future growth. From its state-of-the-art control centre, all 26 NewCold locations worldwide are monitored and managed. The facility features 555 solar panels, energy-efficient systems, and a dedicated training centre for talent development. More than 300 professionals from 35 nationalities work here every day on the future of cold chain logistics. During the opening, Paul Depla, Mayor of Breda, highlighted the GISC’s importance for regional economic growth and employment.
The new frozen warehouse in Dinteloord stands out for its impressive 43-meter height and fully automated operations. Through a partnership with neighbouring fruit and vegetable cultivator company Rijk Zwaan, NewCold uses an environmentally friendly energy source that emits significantly less CO₂ than the regular power grid. This collaboration also enabled operations to begin even before the warehouse’s grid connection was completed. The facility currently operates entirely off the public electricity grid—a world first.
“We’re proud of our newest location, and for good reason, we call it our flagship warehouse in the Netherlands,” said Jonas Swarttouw, Managing Director Europe. “The warehouse is fully operated by a local team. Thanks to our automated systems, we can store 134,000 pallets on just 32,000 square meters using nine pallet cranes—traditional warehouses would require roughly three times as much space. Our Dinteloord warehouse proves that sustainability and efficiency can go hand in hand. This also strengthens our collaboration with leading food producers such as Lamb Weston.”
