This prestigious list highlights the world’s leading scientists who have made a substantial impact in their respective fields through their citation influence. For researchers, institutions, and science enthusiasts alike, this is a vital resource to recognise excellence and track cutting-edge scientific contributions.

Developed jointly by Stanford University and Elsevier, this list identifies the top 2 per cent of scientists worldwide by standardised citation metrics. It evaluates research impact using career-long and single-year citation data across 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields to ensure fair and comprehensive representation. The selection metric—the composite indicator (c-score) accounts for the number of citations, co-authorship adjustments, and authorship positions, focusing on meaningful impact rather than just productivity.

The 2025 update uses data indexed by Scopus as of August 1, 2025, covering citations up to the end of 2024. This version is based on a snapshot of over 100,000 top scientists based on their composite citation scores. It offers: Career-long citation impact data; Recent single-year citation metrics for 2024; Metrics adjusted for self-citations; Classification of scientists into detailed scientific subfields and Information on retracted papers and adjustments for their citations.
