France’s wine industry is on track for a strong rebound in 2025, with national output projected to rise between 10 per cent and 17 per cent year-on-year, according to early estimates from the country’s ministerial statistical service for agriculture, Agreste.
The forecast, based on data as of August 1, puts production between 40 and 42.5 million hectolitres — broadly in line with France’s five-year average — and marks a significant recovery from 2024’s challenging harvest, when volumes fell 18 per cent to 39.3 million hectolitres due to adverse weather.
Agreste cited favourable weather conditions this year, with a warm, dry early summer limiting disease pressure and no major weather hazards reported across key wine-growing regions. The improvement is particularly pronounced in Burgundy, Champagne, the Loire Valley, and Charentes, where healthy vineyards and early ripening are expected to drive output above last year’s levels — and in some cases, above the five-year norm.
In Champagne, the absence of weather and health-related setbacks means production could approach historical averages, while Burgundy is set to rebound from last year’s mildew damage despite isolated hail events. The Loire Valley is seeing similar gains thanks to early ripening and strong vine health, and Charentes is on course to recover fully from its 2024 shortfall.
However, gains in Bordeaux, southwest France, and Languedoc-Roussillon will be partially offset by ongoing vineyard reductions from grubbing-up schemes launched in 2023, which have removed over 20,000 hectares to date.
Agreste’s outlook suggests a stable and potentially lucrative year for French winegrowers, aligning volumes with long-term trends after the volatility of recent harvests.
