Saudi Aramco launches Regional Centre for Sustainable Fisheries

The new centre, located on Abu Ali Island in Jubail, is part of Aramco’s broader marine conservation efforts in the Arabian Gulf

Saudi Aramco has inaugurated the Arabian Gulf branch of the Regional Centre for Sustainable Fishery Development, in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture. The initiative underscores Aramco’s commitment to advancing economic development, supporting local fishing communities, and promoting sustainable marine practices.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, the new centre, located on Abu Ali Island in Jubail, is part of Aramco’s broader marine conservation efforts in the Arabian Gulf. It features a state-of-the-art fish hatchery aimed at replenishing local fish populations that have declined due to overfishing. The facility focuses on breeding native species to marketable sizes, enhancing both local livelihoods and global competitiveness.

Designed to support the entire fish life cycle, the hatchery includes tanks for broodstock management, on-site plankton cultivation for larval feeding, and juvenile rearing. Once matured, the young fish are released into the Gulf waters to support population recovery. The facility leverages cutting-edge aquaculture technologies to ensure fish health and integrates advanced water recycling systems to align with Aramco’s circular economy goals.

This project also complements Aramco’s mangrove afforestation initiative, through which over 43 million mangrove trees have been planted. These coastal ecosystems act as vital nursery habitats for the juvenile fish released from the hatchery, strengthening the resilience of marine biodiversity in the region.

The launch of the centre represents a significant step in Aramco’s broader strategy to invest in citizenship initiatives, foster sustainable development, and protect the Arabian Gulf’s natural resources for future generations.
