ABARES will examine whether there is evidence of market failure within the supply chain
The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) has launched a public consultation process as part of its independent review of the Australian chicken meat industry. An Issues Paper has been released to guide submissions, which are now open via the Have Your Say portal until 30 May 2025.
Commissioned to investigate the dynamics between chicken meat growers and integrated producers, ABARES will examine whether there is evidence of market failure within the supply chain. The review will also consider potential corrective actions if any market failures are identified.
The terms of reference for the review have been made publicly available, outlining a broad scope that includes analysis of recent industry inquiries and the historical development of the chicken meat sector.
Submissions are welcome from all interested parties. Participants can choose to submit their views through written submissions or a guided online portal. ABARES has assured contributors that submissions will remain confidential and has made confidentiality deeds available.
Stakeholder engagement will be a central part of the review process, with ABARES planning to consult widely across the industry. A draft report will be shared for stakeholder feedback by mid-2025, ahead of a final report to the government later in the year.
