Fonterra announces largest decarbonisation project in New Zealand

This $64 million investment will reduce Fonterra’s overall emissions by nine per cent, resulting in a total decrease of 155,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent each year

New Zealand’s dairy co-operative Fonterra is set to convert two coal boilers to wood pellets at its Clandeboye site in South Canterbury, marking an important step in the company’s commitment to phasing out coal by 2037.

This $64 million investment will reduce Fonterra’s overall emissions by nine per cent, resulting in a total decrease of 155,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent each year. This reduction is comparable to removing more than 64,000 cars from New Zealand’s roads annually.

Fonterra Chief Operating Officer Anna Palairet stated that this project represents a significant milestone in the Co-operative’s sustainability journey as it strives for a 50.4% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, based on a 2018 baseline.

“This conversion project at Clandeboye further demonstrates our Co-op’s commitment to sustainability and climate action, following successful boiler conversions at our Te Awamutu and Hautapu sites.”

“With this investment, our largest decarbonisation effort to date, we are not only reducing our environmental impact but also ensuring operational resilience. This project signifies an important step toward a coal-free future.”
