In the nearly eight months since World Central Kitchen served its first plates of food in Gaza, teams have provided more than 50 million meals by land, air, and sea to Palestinian families in need. Organisation have established three field kitchens, built a network of more than 70 community kitchens, opened a maritime aid corridor, and participated in airdrops. By working shoulder-to-shoulder with impacted communities, we have overcome challenges and are ensuring meals get to people in desperate need of support.
The Palestinians working in Field Kitchens cook tens of thousands of meals daily for families sheltering in makeshift camps and for patients and staff at a dozen medical facilities across Gaza. Up until late May, the organisation was operating field kitchens in Rafah, Deir al-Balah, and Al-Mawasi. On May 21 Rafah Field Kitchen was forced to pause work due to evacuation orders by the Israeli military. Before pausing operations due to the mandatory evacuation, Rafah Kitchen was producing up to 50,000 meals daily. “We come early in the morning with all seriousness and energy,” said Ramadan, one of the Palestinian chefs who was working in our Rafah kitchen. “Our goal is to alleviate the burden of the displaced and lift them toward better days.”
The two remaining field kitchens in Deir al-Balah and Al-Mawasi—are scaling up their meal counts to meet the need. The one in Al-Mawasi is affectionately known as Damian’s Kitchen, named after one of our seven heroes killed on April 1. The organisation is also preparing to build another Field Kitchen in central Gaza—already being called Zomi’s Kitchen, after another incredible hero we lost on April 1.
