Mondi and UN World Food Programme strengthen partnership to reduce food loss

Priorities for 2024-2027 focus on protecting WFP’s food aid packages in challenging conditions, using more sustainable packaging materials, and minimising waste

Mondi Group, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper announced a three-year extension to its partnership with the UN World Food Programme (WFP), the world’s largest humanitarian organisation providing food assistance to those recovering from conflict, disasters and the impact of climate change.

Over the past few years, Mondi’s technical expertise, R&D infrastructure, and financial contribution have supported WFP in improving and optimising packaging solutions to withstand difficult transport, storage and handling conditions in crisis-affected regions.

Between 2024 and 2027, the partnership aims to find more sustainable alternatives to existing packaging materials, supporting WFP food manufacturers in working with sustainable fibre – both virgin and recycled- optimising material use, and enhancing packaging quality.

These initiatives will support the fight against hunger by addressing packaging-related food losses across WFP operations. They will also contribute to global efforts to curb food loss and waste, which is vital, considering that one-fifth of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted.

With 733 million people facing hunger and up to 1.9 million on the brink of famine, the humanitarian challenges ahead are immense. Mondi is committed to using its expertise in sustainable packaging to help WFP tackle these challenges, ensuring vital food supplies reach those in need.
