Khaled Hneifat, the Minister of Agriculture in Jordan, has announced a new policy aimed at restricting tomato exports and increasing imports to local markets. This measured approach will continue until exports are completely halted if the current trend of decreasing tomato imports and rising market prices persists.

The decision is intended to ensure an adequate supply of tomatoes for local consumption. According to the Bahrain News Agency, the Ministry of Agriculture has observed a reduction in the quantities of imported tomatoes and a corresponding increase in market prices.

The decline in tomato imports to central markets has resulted in higher prices, which can be attributed to the transition between production cycles and rising temperatures. The ministry anticipates that by mid-August, the market will stabilise with regular quantities that meet or exceed local demand, leading to a decrease in prices before that time.
