Vietnam exported more than 600,000 tons of mangoes, worth 310 million USD to 53 countries and territories. Vietnam’s mango’s importers are Russia, the US, South Korea, the European Union, Australia and China, demanding markets such as Japan.
The free trade agreements that Vietnam has signed help Vietnam’s mangoes to enter many new markets. Mango tree can be grown all year round without much change in quality.
Vietnam has about 87,000 hectares under mangoes, nearly half of the Mekong Delta.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Huong, Deputy Director of the Plant Protection Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that Japanese consumers prefer Dong Thap’s mangoes.
Currently, Vietnam has 845 area codes for mango growing regions, in which region with an area of 42,000 hectares accounts for 31%. Particularly, Cat Chu mango exported to Japan has 16 planting area codes issued, mainly in Dong Thap. Besides exporting, the Plant Protection Department also encourages provinces to have chain of specialty stores in big cities for easy access by consumers.
Mr. Le Quoc Dien, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dong Thap province, said that boosting exports in demanding markets also promotes Vietnamese agricultural products.
Vietnam plans to expand its total mango area by 2030 and increase exports to 650 million USD, taking advantage of growing global demand.
