Japanese food brand Meiji announces new dairy facility

A new facility with a production capacity of 430,000 tons of raw milk per year, which is expected to increase to 500,000 tonnes annually

Japanese food company Meiji is investing JPY 48 billion ($331 million) in building a new dairy production facility in Nakashibetsu, Hokkaido, Japan.

Meiji has announced a new facility with a production capacity of 430,000 tons of raw milk per year, which is expected to increase to 500,000 tonnes annually. The facility will cover 230,258 square meters.

According to Meiji the construction of a new plant to ensure stable provision of dairy products due to the deteriorating facilities at its Nishi Shunbetsu and Honbetsu plants, which have been operational for more than fifty years. The new plant will also help improve the added value of dairy products and expand Meiji’s domestic and international businesses.

The Nishi Shunbetsu facility produces non-fat dry milk, concentrated skimmed milk, butter, and cream. Honbetsu makes concentrated skimmed milk and cream. The products are for retail and B2B markets.

The company produces ingredients for yoghurt, sports proteins, and other products. Meiji plans to establish a new plant to develop new products that enhance the value of milk. This will be achieved by reorganising the production structure, strengthening the core business, increasing demand, and improving the overseas export capabilities. The ultimate goal is to promote growth and expand the company’s product portfolio.
