Researchers at the Chonbuk National University in Korea have discovered new healing properties of an Asian wild medicinal herb Allium Hookeri.
Allium Hookeri is a wild herb cultivated in India, Myanmar, Nepal and China. It is used mainly in medicinal and food supplements, and it possesses antioxidant, anti- microbial, anti- diabetic and anti- obesity properties.
Studies revealed that the herb hindered the productions on nitric oxide, reactive oxygen species and inflammation related cytokines, thereby suggesting its potential role in preventing various diseases associated with inflammation. Mouse cells were incubated with lipopolysaccharide to induce inflammation and then treated with Allium Hookeri.
The healing properties of the herb are likely due to its sulphur and phenolic compounds along with phytosterols and vitamin C components.
The research team will further focus on providing additional mechanical evidence to demonstrate this possibility in vivo.
