Singapore Food Agency seizes 600kg of illegally imported food

Seized food includes pork, chicken, beef, duck and fish products from Thailand

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has seized over 600kg of illegally imported food from Thailand, following raids conducted at various food retail establishments across Singapore.

According to SFA, during raids conducted at eight food retail establishments across Singapore, SFA officers detected the sale of illegally imported processed and raw meat from Thailand at six of them. These include pork, chicken, beef, duck and fish products. Three of the food retail establishments were also found to be operating without a valid licence.

SFA is investigating further investigation of all six establishments. SFA stated that illegally imported food products were from unknown sources and unlicensed food establishments pose a risk to food safety.

According to SFA, retailers who have illegally imported food products for the purpose of selling can be fined up to $ 50,000, imprisonment for two years or both.  If the retailers are convicted of the offence subsequently may face a fine of not more than $ 100,000 or jail up for three years or both.

Offenders who operate food establishments without a valid licence can be fined up to $10,000. In the case of a subsequent conviction, offenders can be fined up to $20,000, imprisoned up to three months, or both.
