The MATAN Food Bank Professionals Association of Nigeria has launched a new Automated MATAN Food Security Initiative (AMFSI), a digital food access system aimed at providing direct support to more than 40 million Nigerians. The initiative was introduced at the close of the association’s three-day national programme in Lagos.
Speaking at the event, MATAN’s National President, Olakunle Johnson, said the system was developed to address rising hunger across the country through a fully digital, community-driven approach. He explained that the platform is built around a new Virtual Digital Identity (VDI) system, designed to remove the traditional bottlenecks that have slowed down food support services for years.
According to Johnson, the VDI platform will enable individuals in every community to be digitally captured and connected to nearby food banks and community kitchens, creating a decentralised structure for nationwide food access. He emphasised that the project is not a political pledge but a private-sector-led solution supported by digitalisation and broad stakeholder collaboration.
Johnson added that MATAN has already engaged local and international investors willing to back the rollout, while the government at all levels will serve supervisory and enabling roles. He described the launch as the second phase of MATAN’s broader food security agenda.
