Indonesia’s shrimp export sector posted a robust performance in May 2025, with volumes reaching 21,288 metric tonnes, a significant +27 per cent year-on-year (YoY) increase. Export value soared even higher to $180 million, marking a +33 per cent YoY rise and underscoring a strong market shift toward higher-value products. This growth surge is widely seen as a strategic front-loading of shipments ahead of anticipated U.S. anti-dumping measures.
According to Shrimp Insight, from January to May 2025, Indonesia’s total shrimp exports reached 89,224 metric tonnes valued at $756 million. These figures represent a +15 per cent increase in volume and a +26 per cent jump in value compared to the same period last year, reinforcing Indonesia’s growing competitiveness in global shrimp trade.
Cooked and marinated shrimp continued to lead the value-driven growth. In May alone, exports in this segment rose to 5,951 MT, a striking +61 per cent YoY increase. Year-to-date (YTD) exports for this category totalled 26,248 MT, up +37 per cent from the same period in 2024, highlighting Indonesia’s strategic pivot toward ready-to-eat seafood formats.
Raw Litopenaeus vannamei (whiteleg shrimp) remained a volume staple, with May exports climbing to 9,828 MT, a +23 per cent YoY increase. YTD exports in this category stood at 42,883 MT (+20 per cent YoY), maintaining its role as Indonesia’s core shrimp product by volume.
Breaded shrimp exports also saw healthy growth, rising +15 per cent YoY to 934 MT in May. Cumulative exports for this value-added product reached 3,725 MT (+8 per cent YoY).
In contrast, exports of raw Penaeus monodon (black tiger shrimp) continued their downward trajectory, dropping -8 per cent YoY in May to 853 MT, with YTD shipments falling -14 per cent to 3,485 MT. The data reflect a longer-term decline in demand or supply capacity for this premium species from Indonesia.
The United States continued to anchor Indonesia’s shrimp export market, receiving 14,458 MT in May (+25 per cent YoY). Year-to-date shipments to the U.S. totalled 59,744 MT, a +14 per cent rise from 2024. The sharp uptick in May suggests exporters accelerated deliveries in anticipation of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s final determination on anti-dumping duties.
Japan: May exports dipped -6 per cent YoY to 2,802 MT, though YTD growth remained positive at +7 per cent (13,359 MT).
China: Rebounded with May volumes soaring +294 per cent YoY to 1,620 MT. YTD exports rose to 4,466 MT (+21 per cent YoY), despite earlier volatility.
EU-27: Saw robust growth, with May exports up +93 per cent YoY (882 MT) and YTD figures reaching 4,095 MT (+63 per cent).
Canada: Continued its upward trajectory, with May volumes up +28 per cent YoY (340 MT) and YTD exports doubling to 1,974 MT (+108 per cent YoY).
