ALDI Australia is investing more than $1 billion in a new automated distribution centre at Bradfield, Western Sydney, as the supermarket chain expands its logistics infrastructure to support future growth.
The Sydney Automated Distribution Centre, currently under construction, will double ALDI’s warehouse capacity in New South Wales and is scheduled to open in 2030. The facility will replace the retailer’s existing distribution centres at Minchinbury, Prestons and Eastern Creek and will supply ALDI stores across NSW and the Australian Capital Territory.
The centre will be capable of handling more than 680,000 product cases per day at peak capacity and up to 2.5 million pallets annually, representing an increase of up to 30 per cent over ALDI’s current capacity. Its design is intended to meet forecast demand through at least the mid-2040s.
The Bradfield facility will incorporate advanced automation across multiple temperature-controlled environments, making it the only supermarket distribution centre in Australia to feature a dedicated automation sub-system across these environments, according to ALDI.
The investment forms part of ALDI Australia’s broader expansion of its supply chain and logistics capabilities. A similar automated distribution centre is being developed at Tarneit in Victoria. Together, the two projects will take ALDI’s total investment in automated distribution centres to more than $2.5 billion.
ALDI said the new infrastructure will improve supply chain efficiency, support future store expansion and enable more efficient distribution while helping maintain its low-cost operating model.
“ALDI has always taken a long-term view of our investment in Australia,” said Anna McGrath, CEO, ALDI Australia. She added that the Bradfield facility will support the company’s plans to add approximately 100 ALDI stores nationally and extend its low-price offering to more Australian communities.
The investment comes 25 years after ALDI opened its first Australian stores in Sydney and is aimed at supporting the retailer’s next phase of growth while maintaining its focus on value and operational efficiency.
